, you know, reinvent itself and re-gain public trust. most recently toyota, correct? we saw commercials on the air all over the place. i'm wondering what goldman will actually do to restore public trust in the company. >> you make a good point with the toyota comparison, too, and others have pointed out to me that america loves to find a corporate villain when there's something going wrong. high energy prices and oil companies were the villain. high drug prices and drug companies were the villain and maybe rightfully so, but we've moved on in some cases from those debates and now it is goldman sachs and wall street that is in the crosshairs. will we move on from this again or is senator carl levin and this committee and others including the sec going to get to the bottom of the behavior that may have led to the bubble and make some real changes? we're still in the thick of it. you remember the toyota ads, was there a bit of an apology to that and mistakes were made, but the acknowledgement that the company made mistake, we certainly remember that from toyota's lesson. >> and lloyd blank

much. there is more trouble this evening for toyota. the transportation department is seeking the maximum civil fine allowable, more than $16 million. it says toyota knew it had a problem with sticky gas pedals in late september but did not tell the government until january. toyota is expected to appeal. now to the earthquake in baja, california. more than 300 aftershocks have been reported since the magnitude 7.7 quake hit yesterday. it was centered south of mexicali and felt in southern california and as far away as phoenix and las vegas. two people in mexico were killed. experts say the toll was minimal because the force of the quake moved northwest away from population centers. bill whitaker now from the california/mexico border. >> reporter: it was the most powerful earthquake to hit the border region in 18 years and it sent people in both mexico and california running from their houses. >> i was so scared for my life. >> reporter: really? you thought you were going to die? >> yeah. >> reporter: the heaviest damage was in mexicali, mexico, the border city of a million peo

, everyone. >>> today, toyota is agreeing to pay a record fine stemming from its gas pedal problems. tom costello is in washington with more. good morning. >> reporter: today is the deadline for toyota to accept or fight a $16.4 million fine. the company is expected to pay up, the largest fine ever assessed by the government against a car maker. the government alleges toyota knew about sticking gas pedals last september, but hid the effects and issued a recall. toyota is facing mounting civil lawsuits as well as criminal investigations. a $16 million fine for toyota is really not significant, but it is yet another strike against the company's reputation. toyota recalled 2.3 million vehicles in january for the sticking accelerator. the company has recalled more than 8 million vehicles worldwide because of acceleration problems and braking problems. a government official tells nbc news by paying the full civil penalty, toyota is accepting responsibility for hiding this safety defect from nhtsa, the national highway safety administration, in violation of the law. it now has 30 days to write

coming traffic on alabama avenue and collide with a toyota camry, killing its driver. now he is charged with involuntary manslaughter. witnesses say the van came up from behind going fast when he crossed the center line. it hit the camry so hard the car flew into the air, took out the traffic signals, flipped over several times before landing on the ground. the car was crushed trapping 37- year-old marry elizabeth winbush inside. the van caught fire. witnesses ran to the car pulling three children out. police say fourth child was thrown from the camry, all four had critical head injuries. medics tried to save winbush but she went into cardiac arrest and died. today police charged the van's driver. 34-year-old gene jones with involuntary manslaughter for a crash witnesses described as horrific. >> i looked in my rear view mirror and this van was coming in. it seemed like 170 miles per hour. he pulled on the side of the incoming traffic and he hit the car right there and that was pretty much everything. >> now jones and a passenger were pulled from a van but are expected to be okay. cour

. tomorrow -- five weeks. tomorrow will see the key march employment numbers come out, and toyota sales are booming in japan, up 50% last month. ford sales in china and local partners there, they jumped about 84% in the first quarter. let's get to eric bolling from fbn. what's going on here? >> well, initial claims which is the weekly number, they dropped 6,000 so that means 6,000 fewer people than the last week applied for unemployment insurance. that's the good news. a little bit more good news, tomorrow it looks like most analysts and most economists expect jobs to be created for the month of march. that's only the second time a month had job creation and last time was a year ago march, 64,000 jobs were created, and we've seen just month after month of job losses. so tomorrow the expectation is anywhere between 175,000 jobs created and 200,000 jobs created. the other piece of good news. now a little bit of the bad news, a lot of that job creation tomorrow ising with attributed -- being attributed to two major factors. number one, the census. the census has hired hundreds and hundreds
